Despite the heavy rain, there were a few people who made it to the meeting tonight. We were pleased to welcome Matt Henry and John Nelson from the Reed Group who presented information on a product called M.D. Guidelines. There was a lot of lively discussion and at the conclusion, Matt spoke with Gina about setting up some webinars so everyone can gain the information about how this product might help our practices. Keep an eye open for an email with times and dates of these offerings.
Time is nearing for the next election of Board members for the chapter, so we're looking for folks who are wanting to become more involved. The Board consists of the President, President Elect, Past President, Secretary and Treasurer who are considered officers and the Director of Education, Director of Membership, Director of Media Relations and 2 Directors at Large. In order to be selected as President Elect, the person needs to have been a Board member at some point during the past 3 years. Other Board officers (Secretary or Treasurer) need to have been active members of the Chapter for more than one year. If you're interested in running for one of these positions or have questions about the duties of the position, please contact our Past President, Renee Peters and let her know of your interest. The next meeting will take place on WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8 at 6:30 P.M. The change in date is necessary in order to accomodate our speaker, Dr. Feinsod who is an authority in Colorado on Geriatric care. He will be speaking about siderail and bed safety, please plan to join us at the Pegasus Restaurant in Castle Rock.

Answer to question
One of the questions most frequently asked by members and those considering joining AALNC is 'what do I get for my membership dues?' There are many benefits of membership starting with networking opportunities and educational offerings at each of our Chapter meetings, listing in the Chapter and National directories and the opportunity to 'attend' teleconferences, seminars and conferences. Additionally, National has negotiated discounts for members with CaseSoft (15% on any of their products), a new business course entitled "LNCbiz: Business and Marketing Skills for Legal Nurse Consulting which is essential to provide you with the best opportunity to get your business off to the right start and at avoid many common errors and pitfalls made at the start up of entreneurship. This course can also be of benefit to established LNCs who want to move their business along. The prices are reasonable and lots of work has gone into making this material available for those looking for a certification class. Great conference
Hi Everyone,
I spent Saturday afternoon and evening visiting 3 time zones (some more than once) on the way home, finally arriving at 10:45 PM. Despite being very tired, I was feeling energized by all the wonderful workshops available, the new friends I'd made and the networking opportunities that were presented.
During the annual business meeting we learned that the economy had hit the AALNC national office as hard as it has everyone else. At the early part of the year, the management company disclosed that unless there were major adjustments made to the budget, the year would end $80000.00 in the hole. Well, they went to work and the year end figure was $2900.00 (in round figures) to the good.
We also learned that membership renewals have not been at projected numbers, which has obviously contributed to the decrease in income. With these things in mind, there was a very hard decision made regarding next years' educational conference. Before I scare everyone to death, the conference has not been cancelled, but there have been some big changes made: 1) the conference will only be 1 1/2 days long, 2) the focus audience will be people living east of the Mississippi and 3) depending on how this endeavor goes, a second conference may be held in the fall in the part of the country west of the Mississipi. Dates of these conferences have not been announced as yet, but as soon as they are firmed up we will all be notified.
I'll be posting more information about conference events in the next few days, so keep checking here.

News from Educational Conference
After a long day of travel on Tuesday that allowed me to miss the snow in Denver as well as possibly a night at DIA, I arrived in Pittsburgh around 10:30 PM and spent a quiet night at the Sheraton 4 Points near the airport here. On Wednesday I changed hotels and was able to attend the Leadership Session that afternoon. There were many great ideas exchanged and some ideas shared about reaching out to potential new members.
On Thursday, the day started at 8:30 AM with the opening keynote address offered by Dr. Judith Wright who spoke about 'the One Decision: Maximizing Your Potential and Living a Life of More'. Her talk was very inspiring as well as motivating and pointed out how we can and do get stuck in ruts of working hard and then using 'soft addictions' instead of energizing breaks to relieve the fatigue only to find that the real result is that instead of being refreshed, we're anesthetized into inertia.
I attended sessions about the use of technology in the courtroom, growing networks, mediation as an alternate form of dispute resolution, changes being made to Joint Commission regulations and a look at how criminal law can be viewed as job security in America for the LNC. The annual business meeting completed the work for the day and it was time to relax and have some fun. We boarded busses and visited the Duquesne Incline (much like the cog railroad in Manitou Springs) and then had a wonderful dinner at Station Square, the former terminal of the railroad station. It's a gorgeous building and the views of the surrounding area were breathtaking as it's located near the shores of the Monongahela River so there was unobstructed sight lines of the skyline at night.
Tomorrow is another full day, beginning at 8 so it's time to call it a night and get some rest. There will be more news of conference events tomorrow night.

Upcoming teleconference
The educational portion of the March meeting will be available as a teleconference!!!! Our speaker will be Carol Manteuffel, who is a Partner with the law firm of Miles and Peters in Denver. She will be speaking on the 'Best Practices for the LNC Reviewing Cases and Being Retained as A Nurse Expert.' There will be a question and answer period following the presentation, as well. We'll be offering this program for a fee of $5.00 to be paid by check and received not later than Friday, March 12. Please make the check payable to Denver Chapter AALNC and mail it to Denver Chapter AALNC, PO Box 623, Castle Rock, CO 80104-0623. By March 15, you'll receive the call in code, your receipt and a PowerPoint so you can follow along with the presentation and take notes.
We're excited about being able to offer this service to those who live too far to attend meetings in person and to those who might need to miss a meeting for other reasons occasionally. Survey Results
As those of you who are Chapter members are aware, I posted a survey and sent the link to each of you via email last month. So far, there are only 7 results posted, so I'm asking each of you to please take a couple of minutes to respond to the questions if you haven't already. Your board really does want to know what you're thinking and how you're feeling so that together we can all improve the Chapter.
Recently, we've been working on making meeting time more accessible. Our latest effort is to pursue the option of having meetings presented as webinars. Keep an eye on this blog for more information, it could happen as soon as the March meeting!

News from Denver AALNC
Hi Everyone,
As those of you who attended the November meeting are aware, we're in the process of assessing the needs and interests of the membership. Currently, we're looking for alternative meeting sites and so far have learned that meeting rooms in restaurants can be very expensive. I've spoken with folks at Maggiano's Little Italy as well as Landry's and a place called Great Northern...all of them are far out of our reach. so if any of you have ideas or options to the Village Inn location, please let me know what they are. Survey results have indicated that a location in the Southern end of the Denver metro area (like Englewood, DTC) are preferable, so let's keep that in mind.
Another issue of concern is the educational program. At the January board meeting we decided to have a focus for this year and to concentrate on standards of care. We're planning to have speakers who are attorneys, MDs, and nurses address the issue from their perspectives. Hopefully, this will begin to address the request for more nonmember speakers and offer a wider range of information.
If you're currently a member of the Denver Colorado Chapter of AALNC and have not renewed your membership for the new year, please do so soon, and if you're not a member yet, don't delay. We're planning an exciting and interesting 2010 and want everyone to be a part of it!
